Manage areas

Which areas you see

You see areas homed in or linked into your projects. The sidebar project switcher narrows the Overview to one project; All projects shows them all but you cannot add areas or groups, or unlink, from there. A workspace Admin sees no areas in a project until they add themselves to it. An area you reach only through an order shows on that order's pages, not in the area list.

Home and linked areas

Every area has one home project, where it is renamed, reshaped, grouped, moved and deleted. Bring in an existing area links it into other projects without copying it: their members see the area, its home group and every deliverable over it, whichever project's order produced them. A linked area cannot be edited from the project it is linked into.

Project chips

A chip on an area row or in Area Details marks an area homed elsewhere and names that project. Select it to open the project if you are a member. The app has no list of every project an area is linked into.

Find areas

The area list

Search areas and groups... matches area and group names. Areas are listed by group, with an eye button to show or hide each row or section. Hidden items, collapsed sections and legend filters are remembered in your browser per workspace.

The map

Click an area to open Area Details. Where areas overlap, right-click to choose one. Right-click inside a group's bounds for Zoom to group and Download Group GeoJSON.

The Deliverables legend

The Deliverables legend colours each area by the status of its deliverables. Select rows to show only those statuses; Show all clears the filter. Cancelled deliverables are not shown, so an area with only cancelled ones appears under None. An area with several statuses takes the first of: In Progress, Tasking, Planned, Pending, Delivered. See Deliverables.

The Area Details panel

Open it by selecting an area. Hover over a disabled button to see why.

ButtonUnavailable when
RenameYou cannot edit the home project, or the area is linked here.
Edit geometryThe area has any deliverable, cancelled ones included.
Move to another projectNot shown when the area is linked here.
DeleteThe area has a deliverable that is not cancelled.
Remove from this projectShown instead of Delete where the area is linked. Unavailable in All projects.

The Deliverables section lists non-cancelled deliverables. A Pending deliverable cannot be opened from here.

Rename an area

Select Rename in Area Details. You can rename at any time, even with deliverables. The naming rules apply.

Reshape an area

Select Edit geometry in Area Details. Drag inside a polygon to move all of it; Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z redoes. The shape rules apply.

warning

You can reshape an area only while it has no deliverables at all, cancelled ones included. To order over a different shape, create a new area.

Bring an existing area into a project

An order can only cover areas homed in or linked into its project. To link one in:

  1. Select the project in the sidebar (not All projects).
  2. In Add Area, under Existing area, select Bring in an existing area.
  3. Search, tick one or more areas and select Add to project.

You need the Editor role or higher in both this project and the area's home project, so only areas homed in another project you can edit are offered. The area keeps its home group, and its map tiles become available to this project's members.

Remove a linked area from a project

Open the project the area is linked into, then Remove from this project in Area Details. You need the Editor role or higher in this project only. An area cannot be unlinked from its home project; move it instead.

Unlinking is never blocked by orders, which keep their areas. This project's members lose sight of the area and its deliverables unless they reach it through another project, or through an order (that order's deliverables only).

Move an area to another project

Select Move to another project in Area Details. You need the Editor role or higher in both projects, and the name must be unique in the new one.

ItemAfter the move
Home projectThe new project. The old one keeps no link: bring it back in if you want it there.
GroupThe area leaves its group. File it into one in the new project.
Links into other projectsKept.
Orders and deliverablesUnchanged.

To move several areas, put them in a group and move the group.

Delete an area

Select Delete in Area Details in the home project. It is refused while any deliverable over the area is not cancelled.

The area disappears from its home and every linked project and cannot be restored. Orders that refer to it still show the place, and its name can be reused. Deleting a project also deletes the areas homed in it.
