Area groups
An area group is a named, coloured folder for areas in one project. It only organises: it grants no access.
How groups work
- A group belongs to one home project. An area sits in at most one group, of its own home project. Others appear under Ungrouped.
- Groups cannot be brought into another project. A linked area shows there under its home group, read-only (see Groups seen from another project).
- Creating, editing, moving, deleting and filing areas into groups needs the Editor role or higher in the group's home project.
Create a group
On the Overview map, select a project, then Add Group. You can also use Create new group while saving an area or batch.
| Field | Rules |
|---|---|
| Name | 2 to 60 characters. Letters A to Z, numbers, spaces, hyphens and underscores only. Unique among the project's groups. |
| Description | Optional, up to 200 characters. |
Open a group
Select a group's header in the area list to open Area Group Details, where every group action below lives.
Rename or recolour a group
Use Edit details or Edit color in Area Group Details.
Saving any change here, a colour included, needs a name of 2 to 50 characters. A group created with a longer name must be shortened first.
Move areas between groups
| To | Do this |
|---|---|
| Put an area in a group or change its group | Pick a group in the Group field of Area Details. Only the area's home project groups are offered. |
| Take an area out of its group | Clear the Group field, or use Remove from group on its row in Area Group Details. |
An area moved to another project leaves its group, which stays behind.
Move a group to another project
Moves the group and every area in it; the new project then owns them. Use Move to another project in Area Group Details.
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|
| Permission | Editor role or higher in both projects. |
| Name clash | Refused if the new project has a group, or an area, with the same name. Rename first. |
| Links and orders | Projects the areas were brought into keep them. Orders stay in their own projects and keep showing the areas. |
Delete a group
A group can be deleted only when it holds no areas (deleted areas do not count). Move its areas out first. Deleting a group never deletes areas, and cannot be undone.
If you see "This area group still holds areas" with none listed, someone has just filed one into it. Reopen the group and move it out.
Groups seen from another project
Viewed from a project an area is linked into, its home group is read-only: you cannot edit, move or delete it, or file areas into it. A project chip shows its home (see Home and linked areas). To change it, open the home project.
